Stonefield Castle

Stonefield Castle

Although it has a longer history, Stonefield Castle was substantially extended and remodelled into its current form in 1837 and offers a fine example of Scottish baronial architecture. The family home of the Campbell clan at one point, the castle still retains much of its mid-19th century furnishings, wood panelling, ornate ceilings and marble fireplaces.

Beyond its interior splendor, Stonefield is set in 60 acres of woodland gardens, lapped by the shores of Loch Fyne. It is based just two miles from the idyllic fishing village of Tarbert, one of the most attractive villages on the Mull of Kintyre peninsula. The hotel has 32 individually and tastefully decorated en suite bedrooms, with views over the gardens and Loch Fyne.

We chose to hold our wedding at Stonefield Castle for personal reasons, aside from its stunning location and beautiful character interiors. For several generations, Iain's family have visited the castle and its grounds. One family story tells how Iain's grandparents found a cave on the castle's island (known as Barmore Island, although it's actually connected by a narrow causeway) where they planned to hide if the Germans invaded West Scotland during the war.

During the wedding weekend, we will have exclusive use of the hotel (including its library, drawing room, loch-side restaurant and billiards room) as well as access to its 60 acres of stunning landscaped gardens, woodland trails and loch-side shore. Please do let us know if you are planning to stay at Stonefield, or at Tarbert, beyond the wedding weekend. We will be staying at Iain's family home in Tarbert for a longer period and would love to meet up with anyone arriving early, or staying late!

Facilities:

  • 32 bedrooms
  • Restaurant and bar
  • Car parking (although please note we are organising coach travel between Stonefield and Glasgow)
  • WiFi
  • Room service
  • Dog friendly – charges apply

The bar at Stonefield serves very nice food throughout the day and into the evening. You can also order yourself an afternoon cream tea (comes highly recommended) if you get peckish between activities! The bar is stocked with a good selection of single malt whiskeys, which we intend to try throughout the weekend. It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it.

Further Information:

With its own 60 acres and woodland gardens that lead down to the shores of Loch Fyne, guests of Stonefield Castle can enjoy a wide range of activities, from walks and wildlife spotting, to ferry trips and fishing. Just two miles away, the pretty fishing village of Tarbert (where Iain's family have lived since the early 1900s, having moved from a deserted farming village after a cholera outbreak in the mid-19th century) is well worth a visit. As well as fishing boats and yachts, there’s a chance to see the harbour’s visiting pod of dolphins. There are many walks and trails in the area to suit all hikers and ramblers (e.g. the 87 mile-long Kintyre Way). You can also sail across to Seil Island or visit the Corryvreckan whirlpool.

Stonefield Castle can arrange fly fishing on Loch Fyne, or even horse trail riding at the nearby Brenfield Estate. Stonefield is also a golfer’s paradise, with five courses all within 40 miles of the castle.
